This experience includes earning four Section Championships, as well as four State Quarterfinal appearances, and three trips to the State Semifinals game.
Rooney’s prep career was at Saint Thomas Academy where he was a football, basketball, and baseball athlete. He was a starter in both football and baseball, earning All-Conference Honorable Mention accolades for football, as well as Team Captain and All-Conference distinctions in baseball.
After high school, Rooney matriculated first to Creighton University to follow his dream to play Division I baseball and eventually returned to St. Paul to attend the University of St. Thomas (UST) where he was a quarterback and participated on the baseball team as he earned his bachelor of arts degree in International Studies.
After graduating from UST, Rooney advanced to Officer Candidate School and became a U.S. Navy Helicopter and Fixed Wing Pilot. When asked what that attracted him to Providence, Rooney answered: “From the first time I walked into the building, I was blown away by everything I experienced. I knew right away that Providence Academy was a special place, a place of deep faith. The more I see, and the more people I meet in the Providence community, the more I know that it is the right place for me to coach. My family and I are looking forward to becoming part of this community.”
Athletic Director Rick Johns said, “Colin possesses a unique military and professional background where he has developed and fostered skills in unit leadership, multi-tasking, and implementing systems that make complicated tasks routine. This skill set makes Coach Rooney an excellent fit for this role at PA.”
Of his appointment, Coach Rooney stated: “I coach because I love the sport of football. I love to compete, but most importantly I love to watch players grow in their abilities. What brings me back to coaching year after year is teaching the players and getting them to reach their own level of personal greatness. It’s about seeing them push themselves beyond what they thought they were capable of and succeeding.”
Please welcome Coach Colin Rooney to our community!
